Scary that they use sms, because it's just insecure. Are they really use sms or is this the japanese fake sms email system?

They use SMS to make sure your phone is Japan, so no non Japanese member.

Not sure, but I'd guess plain SMS, while insecure, is more secure than passwords?

As in most things security, it probably depends heavily on your threat model. For many high value targets, it is probably not great. For most of us? Probably better than you'd think.
