I think these videos are analogous to historical fiction novels. Those books are a niche pretty far removed from academic research and serve a very different purpose.

If you want to learn the most detailed academic knowledge of a time period, reading stories written by James Clavell or Colleen McCullough wouldn't make any sense. On the other hand, for a person who's casually interested in a historical time period and wants a fun immersive way to learn and think about it, reading well written novels about that period is an excellent way to go about it. For that same person, reading primary documents and research papers would probably be quite tedious.

I think the videos from this article are a fun and unique way to explore past time periods, while also being of little value to academic research. There's nothing wrong with different niches serving different purposes, even if they cover the same topic.
