Ehh, I don't know. I think just as many, if not more, were using Hotmail/Yahoo Mail, or their ISP's webmail service. And in those cases, email was
definitely
broken. Stingy mailbox quotas (25 MB!), shitty ads, cluttered UX, on and on.
